Cast, Location and Prop list

Mike Davies - Mike will be playing the part of the main singer in the music video. He is the main focus in the music video as he is the one who performs the most. He also plays the guitar at some points within the video. Mike will also be taking part in the shots of the band setting up and preparing for the live performance.

Danny Evans - Danny mainly plays the guitar within the video but also has a part in the chorus of singing the main words along with Mike 'beat it'. Danny will also be taking part in the shots of the band setting up and preparing for the live performance.

Otis Holmes - Otis is the drummer in the band and plays a large part in the preformance. Otis will also be taking part in the shots of the band setting up and preparing for the live performance.

Ahmad Majidiasl - Detective. During the video there is a chase scene, which we got the idea of whilst watching previous Michael Jackson videos, such as the chase scene in 'Billie Jean'.

Towards the end of the video it will show the final lead up to the live preformance so there will be a shot of an audience of people waiting for them to come on stage.

During the filming of the video a lot of props weren't used, the only use of props were the Drum kit and microphone. There is also a guitar used during the performance this gives more of a variety of sound within the music video. The sunglasses that the 'detective' is wearing reflects the mise en scene of the music video. Each of the costumes have been chosen for a purpose, for example the hat that Mike (the main singer) is wearing reflects Michael Jackson as a person so we decided to use this as it brings out the connotations of the song.

Our main location for the production of the video was in a garage, we chose to film the rehersal's here as it the background is rougher and not as professional as on a stage, this is to show people that behind scene isn't always as glamorous it is made out to be. Other locations include outside of a club just to show the band preparing and arriving to the preformance. The chase scene we filmed was set in various back ally's, we decided to film here because it gives more of a aesthetic feel of where you would get chased, the connotations seen whilst filming here propose more of a reality effect because if this was happening in reality it would happen on back streets not main roads.

Storyboard

This is a new storyboard I created as we chose to change our song. This is our enitial idea but we feel that we have some ideas which have started to film that are not included on the story board.

Michael Jackson - Beat it. Lyrics Analysis.

[1st Verse]
They Told Him Don't You Ever Come Around Here
Don't Wanna See Your Face, You Better Disappear
The Fire's In Their Eyes And Their Words Are Really Clear
So Beat It, Just Beat It

[2nd Verse]
You Better Run, You Better Do What You Can
Don't Wanna See No Blood, Don't Be A Macho Man
You Wanna Be Tough, Better Do What You Can
So Beat It, But You Wanna Be Bad

[Chorus]
Just Beat It, Beat It, Beat It, Beat It
No One Wants To Be Defeated
Showin' How Funky Strong Is Your Fight
It Doesn't Matter Who's Wrong Or Right
Just Beat It, Beat It, Just Beat It, Beat It
Just Beat It, Beat It,Just Beat It, Beat It

[3rd Verse]
They're Out To Get You, Better Leave While You Can
Don't Wanna Be A Boy, You Wanna Be A Man
You Wanna Stay Alive, Better Do What You Can
So Beat It, Just Beat It

[4th Verse]
You Have To Show Them That You're Really Not Scared
You're Playin' With Your Life, This Ain't No Truth Or Dare
They'll Kick You, Then They Beat You,
Then They'll Tell You It's Fair
So Beat It, But You Wanna Be Bad

[Chorus]
Just Beat It, Beat It, Beat It, Beat It
No One Wants To Be Defeated
Showin' How Funky Strong Is Your Fight
It Doesn't Matter Who's Wrong Or Right

The words which I have highlighted above, are the lines which we mainly focused on whilst deciding on how to do our narrative, we ended up decided to do a chase scene.

'don't ever come around here'
'you better dissapear'
'You Better Run, You Better Do What You Can'
'Better Leave While You Can'
- these all relate to being chased by someone or trying to get away.

'That You're Really Not Scared'
'They'll Kick You, Then They Beat You,' - these both relate to being caught and punished for what you have done wrong.

'No One Wants To Be Defeated' - then the we though that he could end up being caught then get away and feel like he has won.

Change of song

We were originally using the song 'Mad World' by Gary Jules. During the filming of this we realised it wasn't working the way we wanted it to. So we have decided to change our song to 'Beat it by Michael Jackson'. As this video has a background use of drums and guitars so we have decided to film a band that we know and for them to mime to the song, unlike the way we were first going to do it and now have the artist in it at all. We decided to change the song as we thought that the idea for this video would be more effective then the idea we first had, also more people know the song so this will help the recognition of the video.

The genre of this song is slightly different from our first song. Beat it by Michael Jackson still is within the rock genre like Mad World but also has more of an American pop genre. As this is in the pop genre it is normally going to be aimed at a younger audience, mainly teenagers, which is the target audience we are aiming for. "Beat It" was released on February 14, 1983 as the album's third single. The song was promoted with a short film that featured Jackson bringing two gangs together through the power of dance.
The lyrics of Beat it and about defeat and courage, it was released in 1983. Our target audience will remain the same as it was going to be for our previous song. However the audience of the original Michael Jackson's song would be slightly older than what we are aiming it at, but what we use in the video and the way we construct will make it aimed at a younger audience. The song was remixed for the singles 25th anniversary by fergie and will.i.am and renamed 'Beat it 2008' this allows a younger audience/ black eyed peas fans to recognised the song if they never new it, this also helps us to aim the song at our intended target audience.
We are also putting the genre 'Film Noir' into our video, even though this isn't a feature of the orginial Michael Jackson video, we feel that we can tell our story better in this way, it will also allow a slight side of comedy to come into the music video, even though this is preciously what we are aiming for but it will make it more for the target audience (16-20) which we are aiming at.

Song length - 4minutes 18seconds.
We have decided to set our music video about the band rehearsing and getting ready for a live concert that they are going to prefrom. The whole song is mimed by the band however we are not going to show the band performing all the way through it will keep cutting to the band setting up and relaxing a lot of the time, to show what goes into the practice before the big performance. The way we have done it with the band to make it work is they have played the Michael Jackson beat it song to get all the beats and words in the right place with the rhythm of the song. We will be putting all the shots of the band in black and white to show the contrast of song against the setting up of the performance. Most of the song is of the band practicing back stage, to make it look as if it is back stage we have filmed it in a garage with the background being a bit rough, so it shows the reality that backstage sometimes isn't as posh as people expect it to be.

Conventions of music videos

Convetions - The expected ingredients in a particular type of media text - usually associated with genre.

Forms and Conventions of music videos:
1. Visuals either illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics and music that our visuals amplify.
2. Genres often have their own music style/iconography.
3. Close-ups should always be included.
4. The artist/band might want to develop their own star iconography, which becomes their star image.
5. Voyeurism is a common theme within music videos.
6. Intertextual references are also popular.
7. Female performer is frequently objectified principally for display purposes, often through a combination of camerawork and editing with fragmented body shots emphasising a sexualised treatment of the star.

Key features of music videos:
1.Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.
(either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting) - applies to numbers 2 & 3.
4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
5. There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the femal body.
6. Thee is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc).

Synopsis

Our Music video is based around a narrative which portrays the messages, values and mood of the song rather than focusing on the artist. The Video is set in various different locations involved with everyday life seen through a series of flashbacks throughout the narrative.

The narrative is centralised around the protagonist, 18 year old Robert Roswell who has been knocked down by a careless driver who leaves Robert Dying all alone in the middle of the road. On his death bed the audience are given a glimpse into his sad and lonely life seen through a range of flashbacks. In the last scene the narrative comes back to the present were we see him close his eyes for the final time.

We have chosen to use a narrative to portray the song because we feel that it will have a more powerful and effective impact on the target audience and also will create a melancholy and sombre mood to better compliment our song choice.

NEW SYNOPSIS

As we have recently changed our song this is the new synopsis:

Our music video is now based around the lead up to a live preformance of a band singing 'Beat it' by Michael Jackson. The music video will show the set up of the instruments and and the rehersing of the performance back stage. It will also give you some background about the band by showing some of the every day aspects of the life they lead.

We feel that basing the music video around the lead up to a preformance and the rehersing of the band and how they have put together there preformance will be effective because it isn't telling a story like most music videos do its showing the audience the reality of what a band has to put into the making of there videos/preformances.

During the music video it also shows some of the bands life and is telling a story based around the main singer in the band.

Storyboard - animatic

This is our original animatic which outlines the structure of the scenes we were planning to use throughout our music video. However whilst we were looking back on the detail of the scenes we feel that a more variety of shots are needed to be put in to give the music video a more professional structure.

Genre

Researching the genre of the song 'Mad World' was more difficult than I thought because the song has been use under several genres.

The song when it was f irst written and perfomed was made by a band called Tears for Fears. Tears for Fears are an English pop rock duo formed in the early 1980s.. The genre of the song 'Mad World' is Electronic. it was the band's third single release and first chart hit, reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart in November 1982. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZRib_aAQFQ

The song was later covered by Gary Jules, who is an American singer/songwriter who is best known for his cover of Mad World which he recorded for the film 'Donnie Darko'. It then became christmas number 1 single 0f 2003. The genre for this cover of the song is different from the first version as it is in the soft rock catergory. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4

The song was then used in the advert for the video game 'Gears of War' in 2006 which is rated 18. The genre of the video game is Shooter/Action which is again completely different than the previous two. When watching the advert for the video game the song seems to almost have an 'watering down' effect and puts a softer feel to the game. 'Gears of war is a shooter game emphazing tactical action over run and gun battles. Players are thrust in climatic clash between whats left of human kind and a awarming underground race called the locust Horde. The main protagonist is Marcis Fenix a once disgraced solider looking to redeem himself by leading a ragtag squad againts the monstrous threat.' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccWrbGEFgI8

The song Mad World is used at the ending of the film Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko is a Drama/Thriller film about a troubled teenagers who is plagued by visions of a large rabbit that manipulates him to commit a series of crimes after narrowly escaping a bizzare accident. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MyMOi4LEr4

Finally the song is used in series 5 of the american medical drama House. House as known as House M.D is an american medical drama that debuted on the Fox newtork in 2004. 'Gregory House, is a misanthropic medical genius who heads a team of diagnosticians at the Princeton‑Plainsboro Teaching Hospital inNew Jersey. Most episodes revolve around the diagnosis of a primary patient and start with a pre-credit sequence set outside the hospital, showing events leading up to the onset of the patient's symptoms. The typical episode follows the team in their attempts to diagnose and treat the patient's illness, attempts that often fail until the patient's condition is critical.' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MUp3PmNa6c

All of the above represent the song Mad World as it has featured in, Donnie Darko and House, The video game advert for Gears of War, was written and sung by Tears for Fears and covered and reached christmas number 1 by Gary Jules. For our music video we are using the version by Gary Jules and using the soft rock genre. To produce what is going to happen in the lyircs we have looked at what happens in all of the aspects that it features in and made our own synopsis.

Analysis of music video lyrics

Target Audience

This is a copy of the questionnaire which we will be asking 25 people to fill out to ensure we get a wide range of results.

The audience is the consumer of the product. Media is seen to effect the audience and make them sometimes do unnesseccary things, this means you have to be careful when making a media product to ensure that it is appropriate. Media is used to effect the passive audience, however now the audience are becoming a more active part of the media. The institution has to proote of represent the product in order to appeal to the audience. Target audience for my music video is in the age range of older teenagers to young adults.

This is the questionairre which has been produced, it will be given to around 25 people of our target audience. To find out specific aspects of the consumer the questionnairre is going to include questions such as, age, gender, income such as part time/full time job, student, unemployed etc, most preferred music genre, how you socialize, do you like the artist who the song choice is by, have you bought any of there cd's/downloaded before, this question will then lead onto how you get your music e.g. do you download, buy cd's, buy of itunes etc and finally there lifestyle/leisure time. The results of the questionnairres will then show us what our target audience are most invloved in etc.

Questionnaire results...

What has been found out from the results of the questionnaires:

Textual analysis. Lemar - The way love goes.

Lemar - the way love goes

This music video is for 'Lemar - the way love goes' and it is produced by Richard Stanard. The genre of the song is R&B, the broad characteristics of the genre include the genre of the artist himself as all of his songs are mainly R&B and the choice of characters used in the video and what people most apply to R&B music.

The lyrics are illustrated by the visuals the whole way through the song, some specific example are:
At the beginning of the song the lyrics 'I never thought that I would ever love again' he is stood back to back with a girl which shows that he now thinks that how it will always be. The next lyrics which are shown by the visually are 'i'll love forever i'll promise to stay by your side' he pulls the woman who he was stood back to back with thinking that he wouldn't be able to love her again then he pulls her in to kiss her during these lyrics. The next lyrics 'heartbroken my first' he stands there hitting his heart as if he has hurt himself and it was his fault. The lyrics 'I stopped holding on and then you came along' shows him and the woman together so the audience know which woman has come along.
The second verse best examples of the lyrics and the visuals include 'I used to think that I would never get to be in love again 'cos that was the only one for me' shows a shot of a burning candle as if the love has burnt out.
The lyrics 'Now I feel that you have come and saved me this heart of mine awoken by your smile' show shots of the woman in the bath, so it is showing the audience who she is and what she is like. During the second verse it is almost as if they are trying to display the woman sexually.
The third verse best examples are at the start of the verse the lyrics 'Someone's coming to save me' is repeated several times and he is sat on a sofa with a fire in front of him and then the fire disapears and it is like the fire is the danger of being alone and he finds someone else so the danger has gone.

During the first chorus of the song is shows blacked out versions of him and dancers on a stage dancing to the song, and then changes to shots of him just against a white background still dancing to the chorus, so it is just the verses that the lyrics and visuals match together.
The second chorus just shows shots of him and her separately showing how the relationship is moving on during time. It also shows the same as the first verse with him blacked out dancing on stage.
The rest of the lyrics use a rubix cube to show images inside of them of what is happening which are almost the same as what is then shown bigger afterwards.
During the whole song there is a post production of a silohoutte of Lemars boday with videos within it, the camera then zooms within it and it starts the next shot of the video from a shot within the silohoutte. Every time the silohoutte is shown the song name 'The way love goes' and the artists name 'Lemar' and every time the word love is in red because red symbolises love and happiness.

The video is cut to the beat and when lemar is dancing or doing any actions everything is to the beat even when he is taping him leg or when he is hitting himself near the heart in one of the verses which i described. There is instruments used in the background of the song but they are not shown in the song once. As the track gets faster the shots speed up when they change from shot to shot this goes with the rythmn of the song. For example the chorus is faster paced than the verses and when they are blacked out dancing the rythmn they are moving in are faster than when they do any moves in the verses.

The image which is trying to be put across of the artist is that he is loving and he will do what is best for the other person and that what happened to him before wasn't his fault and he just wants to be happy again.
In other of Lemar's music videos they also use medium close up shots of him singing which are used in nearly all of his videos. A lot of his vidoes also seem to be about him and a girl and it always is telling a story about it.

The way that the record company is trying to sell the song is by aiming it more at girls as it is a love song and that it will make you feel happy when you listen to it if you are or just getting into a relationship. The music video is mainly based around Lemar as well which also shows it is more aimed at girls otherwise it would focus on the woman more than the man.

The music video overall is more narrative based than performance based because it is telling the story even when it is him performing (dancing) as it is him not dancing on his own when the lyrics are ' I can't dance alone 'cos the beat is to slow'.

Textual analysis. Example - watch the sun come up.

Example - watch the sun come up

This is the music video for Example - watch the sun come up, the genre of this song is dance/progressive house. It was written by Example and Alex Smith and was produced by The Fearless. 'Progressive house is a style of house music that is noted for musical progression (i.e. constant adding, mixing or removing) within melodies and basslines.'

Whilst watching the music video I have seen some specific relationships between the lyrics and the visuals. For example in the first verse, in the opening of the song the first line is 'Hey, Good Morning' and it shows them both waking up next to each other. It then goes on to change her into a cartoon in black and white then she disapears and he wakes up and she isn't there, so it shows her as if it was a dream of how he would want to wake up. Throughout the music video it keeps going back to the cartoon which always represents the idea of being it a dream. Most of the video is used in this way which represents how he lives his life.

The chorus refers to his dream as well and it shows him and the girl on the beach which reflects what he would like his life to be like. The song goes through the narrative of his dreams rather than telling the story of his life which is different than the 'Lemar - the way love goes' music video which I have also analysed.

The video cuts to the beat well, as when the pase gets faster the shots speed up, for example at the begining of the music video the shots speed up with the rythmn of the music. The video is more performance based rather than narrative even though it does tell a story as well, the main part of the video is him walking down various different locations singing the song. The record company is looking to sell the track by having a narrative within the video, even though the video is mainly performance based if you watch it properlly it does have a narrative within it. The song is an upbeat track and the video goes with it well, so this will boost the sales of the track, the record company uses a 'good looking' girl in the video, which will attract the male audience more.

The image of the artist comes across as laid back, and up to date with everything. He has been dressed in a way which is fashionable but at the same time looking like he hasn't made an effort. The girl which is focussed on in the video is a typical 'good looking' girl which looks good the whole way through the video, as the audience for the video is a younger audience, this will attract the male variety of the audience. Everytime we see a full body shot of the girl she is wearing a shot skirt or outfit. Another video by this artist, 'won't go quietly' follows a similar idea, he is surrounded by girls in a club, this is obviously the way the record company want to get his image across as, almost a 'ladies' man, who is very popular with the women, so that will encourage other women to think this of him just from a video which has been made which will make them become a fan of him and buy his products.

The music video overall is more performance based than narrative based because but it is telling the story throughout as well. Even though this is an upbeat dance song, the lyrics are still of a love song, the way they have done this is so the lyrics will target the women and the beat will target the men so they achieve both audiences.

History of Music videos

A music video is a short film/video that goes with a peice of music/song.
Modern music videos are made to market and promote the sale of music records. Before the 1980's music videos used to be described various different names such as 'filmed insert. promotional film, promotional clip or film clip' it was only in the 1980's that the name 'music video' came into use.

An early form of music video were one-song films called promotional clips made in the 1940s for the panoram visual jukebox. These were short films including music, usually just a band on a movie set bandstand. Movie musicals were inspired by Micheal Jackson, Madonna, David Bowie and Bjork these are recording artists who connected to movie musicals and contempary pop graphics. Directors such as Jean-Bartiste Mondino, Michel Gondry, Jean-Paul Goude, Mark Romanek, Marcus Nispel, Spike Jonze and Ben Stokes created music videos which highlighted the dance and singing.

In places such as China music videos are known as MTVs because MTV was responsilbe for making music videos popular. Thirty years ago before MTV made music videos popular they used to be less important then they are now, MTV gave power to music videos, they started broadcasting in 1981 in the USA. The first video ever played on MTV was 'Video killed the radio star'. Because MTV started broadcasting music videos 24 hours a day it meant that more music videos needed producing, this was when music videos then started to play a important role in artists careers.

MTV became highly controversial, some people saw what they did asa new era in music, others thought of it to mark the end of true musical talent, as artists became more appreciated for their looks instead of their vocal abilities. Nowadays the music videos is just as important as the song itself, music videos sometimes also decide the sucess of a song/artist.

Many musical artists made their careers a success by using music videos. As an important part of the music industry, music videos not only showcase an artist's singing talent, but also how they perform. The history of music videos shows how the use of the videos transformed the music industry.

LIIAR

- Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
- There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
- There is a relationship between music and visuals.

L - language
Media Language is an ‘umbrella' term to describe the ways in which audiences read media texts through the understanding formal and conventional structures. Media literacy describes our ability to read write in this extended sense of language’

The language in a music video is what message the video puts across to the consumer when they watch it. The text is communicating a message to the audience. The message which is being communicated with the audience through the music video I am creating is what some people life’s may be like and how some people feel on an everyday basis.

I - Institution
'Producers of texts.' They create media texts not only to entertain there main target is to make money. Nowadays institution is linked to Audience as the consumers are also becoming producers of texts themselves. Another way in which they are linked is in the way that audience is targeted by the institution. At the moment there is a lot of democratisation which means the institute is allowing more people to produce media texts.

As I am producing the music video in a group along with Rob Hodges and Ben Underwood we are the institution of the media text in this prospect. We will have a firm knowledge of what our target audience want from the video from the questionnaires we will produce. This will help us make sure it meets the consumers wants and needs and fits into their expectations of the product.

I - Ideology
‘A dominant set of ideas presenting itself as common sense of truth. Power relations are reinforced through ideology.’

Ideology is a shared system of values and beliefs, media is now produced by individuals who each have there own values and beliefs which go in to the text as it interests them.

The ideology of the music video I am making has my own values and beliefs in it which interests me, starting with the song choice, I have chosen this song because it is a song which I like and a song which interests me. This will make it easier for me to work with as I am working with something I like.

Certain aspects within the ideology are common sense and are just generally there, this is known as hegemony. They are hidden in such a way that it seems to be natural. For example the hegemony within my music video is the stereotypical people who appear in each scene such as the students in the school scene etc.

A - Audience
‘A collective group of people reading any media text.’ The Audience is the consumer of the product and one of the most important aspects when you are producing the media text because it is crucial that the audience enjoy what you are creating otherwise no money is going to be made if it isn't consumed.

The audience which my music video is aimed at are older teenagers to young adults as I feel this is who the genre of the music is more aimed towards. R - Representation ‘Society and social groups within the society’ My media text will be representing certain messages about the group of people that it represents.

The social group which is being represented throughout the video is teenagers even though the video is aimed perhaps at an older audience. The age of the main protagonist in the music video is a student at school around 17 years old.

R - Representation
‘Society and social groups within the society’ My media text will be representing certain messages about the group of people that it represents.

The social group which is being represented throughout the video is teenagers even though the video is aimed perhaps at an older audience. The age of the main protagonist in the music video is a student at school around 17 years old, we decided to do this so that we can relate to the idea more and put more of our own ideology into the project.

Chosen Brief

The breif which i have chosen to do is:

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promotion video together with:
- A digipak for it's release

- A magazine advertisement for the digipak
